FAQ

What does 'd' mean following a fabric number?

The 'd' suffix designates 'denier'. Denier is a unit of weight measuring the fineness of silk and synthetic fiber strands. Originally an 8th century French coin, first silver and then copper, the 50 milligram coin was placed on a scale with the expectation that 450 meters of silk filament would find balance. Hence, the size of that filament would equal 1 denier.

While a term not in common use today, one can easily see and then understand the differences in nylon weights. 70d nylon, on nylon taffeta, is extremely light and if absent a backing is very fluid, soft and without structure. 200, 210, 400, and 420d nylons are very smooth, shiny and supple - they are also very strong and durable - hence are used extensively as the outer shell in lower capacity bags; and as lining or pocketing is almost all bags. 600, 1,000 and higher denier nylons are 'coarse' in appearance and touch - the size of the individual strands or filaments in the weave prevent a very smooth or satin like finish.
